Research Foundation
2003 presents Congress with an historic
opportunity to address the national tragedy of mesothelioma. MARF
believes that Congress’ debate over “reform” of asbestos compensation
and litigation is not enough; Congress must comprehensively address
the nation’s entire asbestos problem, including especially the human
suffering caused by mesothelioma. MARF is therefore advocating on
Capitol Hill for the creation of a dedicated Mesothelioma Research and
Treatment Program with funding of $100 million over the next five
years. These funds would either be allocated directly from Congress,
or would be paid out of a possible compensation trust fund, financed
by companies facing asbestos liability and their insurance companies.

- MARF Representatives Meet with Veterans
Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi.
On March 31, 2003 MARF Executive Director Chris Hahn, MARF Science
Advisory Board Chairman Dr. Harvey Pass, MARF Board of Directors
member Mouzetta Zumwalt Weathers and Lieutenant Colonel James G.
Zumwalt (Mouzetta’s and Jim’s father was Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, Jr.,
whose illustrious life was taken by mesothelioma on January 2, 2000)
met with Secretary Principi and his Chief Research and Development
Officer, Dr. Nelda P. Wray, to urge the VA to increase its funding for
mesothelioma research and treatment. One third of today’s mesothelioma
victims served in the U.S. Navy or in shipyards. Secretary Principi
and Dr. Wray acknowledged the problem and committed to work with MARF
in developing specific programs to advance mesothelioma research and
treatment through the VA.

If you worked at a Navy Shipyard, you may have been exposed to asbestos.
During the construction and maintenance of American warships and other
large vessels, shipyard wokrers and military personnel were commonly
exposed to asbestos-containing boilers, insulation, turbines, pipe
covering, pumps, gaskets and other asbestos containing products.
