Report from USS Rochester Ship’s Store

A big cheery “Hello” to all of you from your Ship’s Store.  Now that the ‘06 Reunion in Branson is in the history books, we have two words for you:  “THINK  CHRISTMAS.”

Reunion Memory Books

Speaking of “history books,” some of you have yet to order your Reunion Memory Book.  We have included an Order Form for your use and we’ll hold the orders open for a while yet.  We want to be sure you all have the opportunity to get your book.  Branson, MO, is a one-of-a-kind place.  The weather was perfect, the shows were great, the fellowship was wonderful.  A few days in early October well worth remembering.  Our thanks to Bob Cosgrove for all his hard work.  And our thanks to everyone who participated.  It’s all about ’ Us Folks.’  And Our Memories.  The more we can share, the better.  A Reunion Book is an integral part of the Reunion experience.   

“Pieces of the ROC”

The Ship’s Store created a “Plank Corner” ably manned by Harold Sewell, GM3, 2^nd Div., ’52 – ’55, who distributed 109 “Pieces of the ROC.”  Harold was a pretty busy fella.   Ship’s Store has lengths of the Rochester’s deck planking available for the members of the Association.  The planks come in two basic types:  “as is” and “cleaned up.”  The “cleaned up” planks have been run through a planer to remove the glue, dirt, grime, and just “spruce up” their appearance in general.  The “as is” planks are just that:  dirty, rusty from the bolts (most broken off), etc.  There is NO CHARGE for the Piece of the ROC, but, whichever you select, your shipping charge will be $10.  Your Ship’s Store uses Priority Mail with Receipt Verification.  There is a form for your use in obtaining your Plank here in the Newsletter.  Please keep in mind, because of the limited number of planks, we must restrict distribution to one plank per member.  And, for those of you who did not received the personalized Certificate of Authenticity, we need to presume upon your patience for just a little longer.  You are not forgotten.  Promise.

Engraving your plank

Thanks and a Tip Of The Hat to:  Frank Dayak, E Div, ’50 – ’52.  Frank dropped us an email to let us know he got his plank engraved with:  the ship, the name of the ship, his name, rank, and dates of service for $15.00, plus $5 shipping.  If any of you are interested (and it sure sounds like a great deal to us !) mail your plank to:

Ship’s Store Stock Changes

As some of you know, your Ship’s Store sold out of nearly everything.  THANK YOU ALL.  We’re busily re-stocking now.

There was a great deal of interest in our new, white golf shirts with pockets and the embroidered ship logo.

If you review the “new and improved” price list in this issue you will note that we will no longer be stocking the 3XL size.  We do not have enough call for 3XL to carry it as a regular stock item.  However, the 3XL size WILL BE available on special order for $4 more than regular stock sizes.  You will also notice that 2XL sizes are $2 more than the other sizes.  To no one’s surprise, our suppliers have increased their prices for these sizes. 

Lastly, we have discontinued the jewelry items.

It is our goal to have the re-stocking completed in plenty of time for your Christmas orders.

Trivia Questionnaire

Thanks and a new USS Rochester ball cap to Randy Steffen, SN, 6^th Div., 58 – 61, who worked so diligently helping put the Trivia Questionnaire together.  You may view the entire Questionnaire on our website.  We’ll provide a few of the questions here in the Newsletter.  Answers will be available in the next issue of the Newsletter – or, for those of you who’d rather not wait, answers will also be posted “in a little while” on our website.

USS Rochester Pen Sets

As part of the process of providing some of the “cleaned up” Planks, there were some good-sized splinters created.  It is these splinters that were used to produce the USS Rochester Pens.  They are beautiful teak and use Cross refills, have polished brass center band, clip, and bottom collar.  “USS Rochester  CA-124” is engraved on the pens.  Their wooden case has a picture of the ROC engraved on the top.  The case is not made from the pieces of the Planks.  Nevertheless, these pens are truly special.  And, in all likelihood, there won’t be any more of them made since there was a limited number amount of planking at the outset.  So, for you Rochester Fans out there (and who isn’t?), these pens are truly one-of-a-kind.  The set is $45.00.  The shipping charge is $5.00. 

USS Rochester Personalized Afghan

This afghan made its debut at the Reunion and is available by special order.  The price of the afghan, including the personalization, is $60, plus the normal $8 shipping charge.  It is woven of 100% cotton with fringe on all four sides and the approximate size is 48” x 72”.  We have made arrangements to have enough on hand that we’re confident we can provide these beautiful afghans in plenty of time for Christmas.  But, to be on the safe side, the earlier you order, the better it will be for us all.  There is a space on the Order Form for your afghan order and the personalization you’d like to have.   

Cribbage Tourney

Last of all, the Cribbage Tourney.  Would you believe that our members were so busy visiting, going to shows, swapping war stories and the like that there was no need for, nor any interest in, playing cards.  We’re really happy to share the news with you, especially those of you who were unable to attend.  Everyone was so busy having a good time there was no need to add any other activity.                                                                                       

We’re sure the next Reunion, in the Washington DC area, will be much the same.  Start planning now to attend.  It will be a great time to visit.  The Elections will be nearly over, the weather should still be nice, and the optional excursions will be memorable.  It’s a beautiful part of the Country.  Besides, the Ship’s Store will likely have some new items to debut.  And, who could ask for a better back-drop for the Ship’s Store items than the Capital of our Great Nation?
